Our verdict

No supplement is a good fix for long-term sleeplessness. The best-studied one, melatonin, shortens the time it takes to fall asleep by only about 7 minutes on average, and the main US sleep-medicine guideline suggests against using it for chronic insomnia. Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is its first-line treatment.

For an occasional bad night or jet lag, Pure Form Melatonin Complex (67/100) is the best checked, and Nightol (64/100) is the cheapest registered option with a printed FDA number. Start with the lowest dose on the box, and do not take it for months without talking to a doctor.

See a doctor if sleeplessness lasts more than a few weeks, you snore loudly or stop breathing at night, or you feel low or anxious. Do not use a supplement while driving or operating machinery, and ask first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or on medicine.

Sleep supplements are heavily advertised on Shopee, often as “sleeping pills” at doses far above what trials used. This guide checks the best-sellers against FDA Philippines records and compares their promises with the research.

7 minutes

is roughly how much sooner melatonin helps people fall asleep, in two meta-analyses of placebo-controlled trials (about 7 and 7.5 minutes).

What the research actually shows

These summaries come from search results about published meta-analyses and a guideline, not from the full papers.

  • Melatonin: a 2013 meta-analysis of 19 placebo-controlled trials (1,683 people with primary sleep disorders) found it shortened sleep latency by about 7 minutes (95% CI 4.4 to 9.8). A 2021 review found about 7.5 minutes. The authors called the benefit modest.
  • The guideline: the 2017 American Academy of Sleep Medicine guideline on chronic insomnia in adults suggests clinicians not use melatonin, valerian or tryptophan for sleep onset or sleep maintenance insomnia (weak recommendations). It says CBT-I should be the first-line treatment. We did not check for a newer version.
  • L-theanine: a 2025 meta-analysis found a small improvement in self-reported sleep latency (standardised difference 0.15), and noted few trials of pure L-theanine.
  • Ashwagandha: a 2021 meta-analysis of five trials (400 people, all in India) found a small effect on overall sleep, larger in people with insomnia at 600 mg or more for at least 8 weeks. The authors said data on serious side effects are limited.
  • Magnesium: a 2023 systematic review found the link between magnesium supplements and sleep uncertain in randomised trials.

In short: melatonin has the most evidence, and the effect is modest. For long-term trouble sleeping, behaviour change and a doctor’s help matter more than any capsule.

FDA number in listing?Yes, and it matches the FDA record
IngredientsMelatonin 3 mg, plus 690 mg of a blend of lavender extract, L-theanine and magnesium L-threonate. No amount for each of the three
Advisory foundNone for the brand or this product
SellerPure Form official store (213.6K shop ratings; 1.2K on this listing; 4K+ sold)
Price₱849 for 90 capsules; one capsule an hour before bed

The listing prints the FDA number, which matches, and gives the melatonin dose, one clear direction (“one capsule an hour before bedtime, avoiding blue light”), and a warning for adults under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding women, people with medical conditions and people on medication. It is 3 mg of melatonin, a moderate dose, from the brand’s own store.

The extras are a blend with no individual amounts, so you cannot tell how much lavender, L-theanine or magnesium L-threonate you get. The listing promises “quick sleep without the next-day drowse”, which the evidence we read does not support, and says the blend “targets multiple pathways involved in rebalancing your circadian rhythm”. Melatonin on its own, at a lower dose, may do the same job for less.

Why it scored well

  • FDA number printed and matches the FDA record
  • One clear direction; warning for pregnancy, medicines and conditions
  • Moderate 3 mg dose

Watch-outs

  • Blend of three extras with no individual amounts
  • “Without the next-day drowse” is a promise, not a finding
  • About ₱9 a night, more than plain melatonin

Price₱437 for 60 capsules (two boxes); one to two capsules a night

The brand’s own listing prints the FDA number, gives the dose and directions, and says it is not for people under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding women. At ₱7 a night for one capsule it is among the cheapest registered ways to buy melatonin.

The listing then claims things it cannot back up. It says Nightol is “non-addictive”, “has no known side effects”, “strengthens the immune system” and “increases energy levels”, and calls it “FDA approved”. Melatonin can cause drowsiness, headache and dizziness, and the FDA does not approve food supplements. Two capsules is 6 mg, double the single-capsule dose.

Why it scored well

  • FDA number printed and matches the FDA record
  • 3 mg dose; clear directions; under-18, pregnancy and breastfeeding warning
  • Low price per night

Watch-outs

  • “No known side effects”, “non-addictive” and “FDA approved” claims
  • Immune and energy claims for a sleep supplement

SellerSwanson Vitamins Philippines (6 years on Shopee, 185K shop ratings, 60% response rate; 10K+ sold on this listing)
Price₱215 for 120 capsules (list ₱332)

The cheapest per night by a wide margin, a plain 3 mg melatonin capsule that is registered with the FDA, and the most-reviewed melatonin on Shopee. The listing makes only modest claims: “encouraging healthy sleep patterns” and “helps readjust from jet lag”.

But it offers no directions and no warnings for pregnancy, medicines or driving. It adds a claim that melatonin “supports antioxidant pathways”. Many reviewers say they take two capsules (6 mg). The shop answers 60 percent of messages. Several other Swanson products have FDA advisories, so check that your box shows the Philippine importer.

Why it scored well

  • Plain 3 mg melatonin, registered with the FDA
  • Lowest cost per night
  • Large review base

Watch-outs

  • No directions or warnings in the listing
  • Registration number not printed
  • 60% response rate; unrelated Swanson advisories

Other registered melatonin 3 mg products. FDA records also list Numax Melatonin 3 mg tablets (FR-4000008615468), Puritan’s Pride Melatonin 3 mg tablets (FR-4000009427330), Nature’s Bounty Melatonin 3 mg quick-dissolve tablets (FR-4000009894662), Webber Naturals Melatonin 3 mg tablets and Sleepasil (a valerian, chamomile, lemon balm and melatonin blend, FR-4000007650059). We saw some on Shopee but did not read their listings, so we did not score them.

Magnesium, L-theanine and herbal blends. Registered magnesium glycinate and L-theanine products exist, and so do many valerian blends, including Pure Form Magnesium + Ashwagandha (FR-4000013013055). The evidence for each is weaker than for melatonin, so we did not rank them.

Before you buy: sleep first, supplements second

  • Fix the basics. Keep a steady bedtime and wake time, get daylight in the morning, cut caffeine in the afternoon, and keep screens and bright light low before bed.
  • Ask about CBT-I. The AASM guideline names it as first-line treatment for chronic insomnia.
  • See a doctor if you cannot sleep for more than a few weeks, you snore loudly or choke at night, or you feel low or anxious.
  • Ask first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, or taking other medicines.
  • Start with the lowest dose and take it as the box says, usually before bedtime. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it.
  • Do not combine sleep products or mix them with alcohol.
  • Check the FDA portal for the exact product name and form. See how to check.

How we researched this guide

We searched Shopee for melatonin and sleep supplements on October 12, 2026, checked more than 20 brands against the FDA Philippines verification portal and its advisories, and read three listings in full. Each was scored with our published rubric. For melatonin we defined the key disclosure as the dose per capsule. Price per night uses one capsule a night unless the listing says otherwise.

The research summary is based on search results about published meta-analyses and the 2017 AASM guideline. We did not read the full papers or check for a newer guideline. This guide is general information, not medical advice. It has not yet been reviewed by our health content reviewer.

Frequently asked questions

Does melatonin help with sleepless nights?

A little. Meta-analyses found it shortens the time to fall asleep by about 7 minutes. The main US sleep-medicine guideline suggests against using it for chronic insomnia.

What is the best sleeping supplement in the Philippines?

In our review, Pure Form Melatonin Complex scored highest (67/100), with Nightol (64/100) the cheapest registered option with a printed FDA number. No supplement is proven for chronic insomnia.

How much melatonin should I take?

Listings range from 3 mg to 20 mg. We did not retrieve dose data, so ask your doctor or pharmacist, and note that we found no evidence that 10 mg or 20 mg works better.

Is melatonin a sleeping pill?

No. It is a hormone supplement, and in the Philippines it is registered as a food supplement, not a drug. A listing that calls it a "sleeping pill" is making a medical claim it cannot support.

Is melatonin addictive?

Several listings say it is "non-addictive" and has "no side effects". We did not find long-term safety data, and we do not accept those claims without a source.

Can I take melatonin every night?

Ask your doctor. The guideline we read does not support using it for chronic insomnia, and we did not find long-term safety data.

Is melatonin safe for children, or in pregnancy?

Ask a doctor first. The listings we read say it is not for people under 18, or for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Does magnesium help you sleep?

The evidence is uncertain. A 2023 review found the link between magnesium and sleep unclear in randomised trials.

Does L-theanine or ashwagandha help sleep?

Both show small effects in small trials. A 2025 L-theanine review found a small effect on self-reported sleep latency, and a 2021 ashwagandha review found a small effect on overall sleep in five trials.

What is CBT-I?

Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, a structured, non-drug programme that the AASM guideline names as first-line treatment for chronic insomnia.

How do I check if a melatonin product is FDA registered?

Search the exact product name and form (tablet, capsule or gummy) on verification.fda.gov.ph, then search the brand in the advisories.

When should I see a doctor about sleep?

If trouble sleeping lasts more than a few weeks, you snore loudly or stop breathing at night, you feel low or anxious, or you are very sleepy while driving.
