Our verdict

Biotin helps hair and nails only if you are deficient, which is uncommon, and high doses can distort medical test results. A 2017 review of the published cases found improvement only in patients with an underlying cause, and said evidence for healthy people is lacking.

If you still want to try it, Wolvit Biotin 5 mg (67/100) is the best checked, with a drug registration and a pharmacy chain’s official store, but it is a very high dose. Generiq Biotin 900 mcg (61/100) is the cheapest and a smaller dose, but its listing claims far more than the evidence supports.

Tell your doctor and the lab if you take biotin before a blood test, especially a heart-attack (troponin) test. Hair loss that is sudden, patchy or heavy is a reason to see a doctor, not to take more biotin.

Biotin (“vitamin B7”) is one of the best-selling hair supplements on Shopee, sold alone at doses from 300 mcg to 60,000 mcg and mixed into collagen and gummy products. This guide checks the best-sellers against FDA Philippines records and compares their claims with what the research found.

18 cases

of biotin use for hair or nail changes were found in a 2017 review. Every patient had an underlying cause. The authors said evidence for healthy people is lacking.

What the research actually shows

We relied on the abstract and summaries of a 2017 review in Skin Appendage Disorders by Patel and colleagues (PMID 28879195), and on news coverage of FDA safety communications. We did not read the full paper or the FDA’s own pages.

  • Who it helps: the review found 18 reported cases of biotin used for hair or nail changes. In every case the person had an underlying problem, such as a biotin deficiency, brittle nail syndrome or uncombable hair, and improved.
  • Healthy people: the review found limited research for biotin in healthy people, and a lack of sufficient evidence to support supplementing them.
  • Strength of the evidence: it rests on case reports. It is not a pooled analysis, and it has no placebo-controlled data for healthy users.
  • Lab test interference: the US FDA warned in 2017, and again in November 2019, that biotin can distort lab results, and that falsely low troponin results (used to diagnose heart attacks) are a particular concern. News reports said a patient taking high-dose biotin died after low troponin results on a vulnerable test.
  • Dose context: the daily amount adults are advised to get is about 30 mcg. Some supplements, according to the reports we read, contain up to 100 mg per pill.

Price₱11 per tablet; you choose the quantity

A single-ingredient biotin product registered as a drug, sold by a pharmacy chain’s official store, with the strength and the directions printed. It is the cheapest per day of our picks that has a drug registration, and the listing tells you what to do if you have a reaction.

The strength is the catch: 5 mg is 5,000 micrograms, about 167 times the roughly 30 micrograms adults are advised to get each day. High-dose biotin can distort lab test results (see below). The specification panel lists the functions as “Detoxing, Cholesterol Management”, which is wrong. One reviewer says a dermatologist advised two tablets a day; the listing says one. A reseller (Arigue Online Shop) sells a 30-tablet bottle at ₱318 with a “February 2027” expiry in the title.

Why it scored well

  • Registered as a drug; single ingredient
  • Strength and directions stated, with an adverse-reaction note
  • Pharmacy-chain official store

Watch-outs

  • 5,000 mcg is far above daily needs and can skew lab tests
  • Spec panel lists “Detoxing, Cholesterol Management”
  • Registration number not printed in the listing

The lowest cost per day of the three, a single ingredient, with the amount, the directions and the percent daily value on the listing. Generiq is a long-running Philippine brand, and 900 mcg is a much smaller dose than the 5 mg Wolvit tablet.

The listing then claims far more than biotin can deliver. It says the product helps “protect eye health”, “bolsters the immune system”, “aids healthy metabolism and blood sugar”, “enhances energy and stamina” and “may improve energy, skin softness and overall appearance within the first 7 to 10 days”. The review we read (below) found no evidence that biotin helps hair or nails unless you are deficient, so those claims have no support. The listing is new, with only four ratings.

Why it scored well

  • Lowest price per day
  • Amount, directions and % daily value shown
  • Moderate dose; established brand

Watch-outs

  • Claims immune, eye, blood-sugar, energy and “7 to 10 day” results
  • Registration number not printed

The most popular of the three, from the brand’s own store. It combines collagen and biotin, which is why it is marketed as an all-in-one beauty product, and the listing includes a “no approved therapeutic claims” disclaimer.

The listing also calls it “scientifically proven, backed by science, FDA approved”, and gives no amount for the biotin or the collagen, so you cannot tell what dose you are buying. Its FDA registration runs only to 30 January 2027. Buyers pay for collagen, and we found no evidence that swallowed collagen helps hair. See our collagen guide.

Why it scored well

  • Registered under this product name; official store
  • “No approved therapeutic claims” disclaimer
  • Large review base

Watch-outs

  • “Scientifically proven, FDA approved” with no amounts
  • Registration valid only to 30 January 2027
  • Paying for collagen that is not shown to help hair

How to choose, if you still want one

  • Ask your doctor first if you have hair loss, brittle nails, or take other medicines. Blood tests can find real causes such as thyroid or iron problems.
  • Choose a low dose. Everyday needs are about 30 mcg, and a few hundred mcg is already generous.
  • Check the FDA portal for the exact product name, in both the food and drug records. See how to check.
  • Skip “hair, skin and nails” blends with collagen unless you want the collagen.
  • Skip listings that say “scientifically proven” or “FDA approved”, or promise results in days.
  • Tell your doctor and the lab before any blood test, especially a heart-attack (troponin) test.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding? Ask your doctor before taking high-dose biotin.

How we researched this guide

We searched Shopee for biotin supplements on October 12, 2026, checked more than 15 brands against the FDA Philippines verification portal (food, drug and advisory records), and read four listings in full. Each was scored with our published rubric. For biotin we defined the key disclosure as the amount per dose. Price per day uses the directions in each listing.

The research summary is based on the abstract and summaries of a 2017 review (PMID 28879195) and on news coverage of FDA safety communications from 2017 and 2019. We did not read the full paper or the FDA pages. This guide is general information, not medical advice. It has not yet been reviewed by our health content reviewer.

Frequently asked questions

Does biotin help hair growth?

Only if you are deficient or have a related disorder. A 2017 review found improvement in people with an underlying cause, and said evidence for healthy people is lacking.

What is the best biotin supplement in the Philippines?

In our review, Wolvit Biotin 5 mg scored highest (67/100), with a drug registration and a pharmacy chain's official store. Generiq Biotin 900 mcg (61/100) is cheaper and a smaller dose. None is proven to grow hair.

How much biotin should I take?

Adults are advised to get about 30 mcg a day, which most people get from food. Supplements go far above that, and we found no evidence that higher doses grow hair.

Can biotin affect blood test results?

Yes. The US FDA has warned that biotin can distort lab results, including heart-attack (troponin) tests. Tell your doctor and the lab if you take it.

Is 5 mg of biotin too much?

It is about 167 times the daily amount adults are advised to get, and is the kind of dose that can interfere with lab tests. Talk to your doctor before taking it.

Does biotin cause hair loss or acne?

We did not find reliable evidence on this in the sources we read. Stop and ask your doctor if you notice a reaction.

Is biotin with collagen better?

We found no evidence that it is. Our collagen guide explains why paying for swallowed collagen may not help hair.

How long does biotin take to work?

Listings promise days. Hair grows slowly, and we found no trial in healthy people that supports a time frame.

Is biotin safe to take with minoxidil?

They are different products, and a reviewer says a dermatologist advised both. We did not find guidance in the sources we read, so ask your doctor.

How do I check if a biotin product is FDA registered?

Search the exact product name on verification.fda.gov.ph, in both the food and the drug records, and look for an FR-, DR- or DRP- number. Then search the brand in the advisories.

Are Kirkland and Nature's Bounty biotin safe to buy on Shopee?

The FDA has issued advisories naming Kirkland Signature biotin products and a Nature's Bounty hair, skin and nails softgel as unregistered. Check the exact product on the FDA portal.

When should I see a doctor about hair loss?

If it is sudden, patchy or heavy, or comes with other symptoms such as tiredness or weight change. A doctor can look for causes.
