Our verdict

VanBushcraft’s Aquatabs 67 mg (78/100, ₱13 per tablet, about ₱0.65 per litre of clear water) is our pick: the exact FDA registration number, the expiry month and clear doses in the listing. Mama’s Cart (77) sells the same tablet with an earlier expiry; Juldan PH (72) has the lowest price at ₱11.49 per tablet in a 100 box but answers only 9% of chats.

All five sell the same product, Aquatabs 67 mg, registered with the FDA Philippines as DRHR-735, so the ranking is about the listing and the seller, not the tablet. Tablets only treat clear water: filter or settle muddy water first. This is general information, not medical advice.

We searched Shopee for Aquatabs and other water purification tablets on October 22, 2026 and looked every brand up in the FDA Philippines verification portal. Aquatabs are drug-registered, so only listings that match a registered brand and strength were ranked; most other tablets had no registry record and went into the “careful with” table.

₱0.57 to ₱0.80

Cost per litre of clear water at the label dose of 1 tablet per 20 L, from our calculation: Juldan PH’s 100-tablet box at ₱11.49 each is ₱0.57 and its 50-tablet pack at ₱15.90 each is ₱0.80. Treating cloudy water after filtering takes 2 tablets per 20 L, doubling the cost.

Prices and stock checked on October 22, 2026. Cost per litre is our calculation: price per tablet divided by 20 L (one 67 mg tablet per 20 L of clear water, as the listings and the maker’s distributor state). Sold counts are the rounded figures shown in Shopee search; on ₱13 tablets they count single tablets, not buyers. We did not use or test any product.

El Niño and your water: what is happening and what to prepare

These points come from the PAGASA climate advisory of 23 September 2026, the Philstar report of 1 October 2026 and the Philstar Life report of 19 October 2026. Conditions change; check PAGASA’s own bulletins for the latest.

  • PAGASA says a strong El Niño is active in the tropical Pacific and is expected to intensify into a very strong one during September to December 2026, lasting through the first half of 2027.
  • The advisory links El Niño to below-normal rainfall, dry spells and drought, and lists water supply stress among the risks. The southwest monsoon and tropical cyclones can still bring heavy rain to some areas.
  • The National Water Resources Board cut Metro Manila’s (MWSS) allocation from the usual 50 to 53 cubic metres per second to 44 from October, to conserve water in Angat Dam. That is about 12% to 17% lower, from our calculation.
  • Palace press officer Claire Castro advised against hoarding bottled water, saying stockpiling could tighten supply and push prices up, and that no bottled water shortage had been reported (1 October).
  • Health Secretary Edwin Mercado warned on 17 October that El Niño heat can worsen heat illness, chronic conditions, waterborne diseases and vector-borne diseases such as dengue, and that people may turn to unsafe water sources as supplies dry up. The DOH said it is testing water filtering devices.

In practice that means more stored, delivered and shared water. Tablets treat germs in clear water; they do not create supply. General advice, not from the sources above: keep stored water in clean containers with lids, because uncovered water breeds mosquitoes, and date each container.

What Aquatabs and other chlorine tablets do, and do not do

These points come from the Chlorine Tablet Working Group guidance (April 2019, hosted by IFRC), the MSF supply catalogue entry for a 167 mg NaDCC tablet and Nutriset’s Aquatabs page. The germ figures are the maker’s label claim as quoted on one pharmacy listing; we did not test anything. General information, not medical advice.

  • Chlorine inactivates most bacteria and viruses that cause diarrhoea, and the chlorine left in the water helps protect it during storage (working-group guidance).
  • Label claim quoted on a pharmacy listing: a 99.9999% reduction in bacteria, 99.99% in viruses and 99.9% in Giardia cysts within 30 minutes in non-turbid water. Nutriset’s page names bacteria and viruses only, not protozoa such as Cryptosporidium and not chemicals.
  • Water should be below 5 NTU (clear) to be properly disinfected. Filter it through a clean cloth or let it settle first. The guidance suggests doubling the dose for turbid water in short-term emergencies and says not to chlorinate above 50 NTU. MSF says tablets do not treat turbid water.
  • A 67 mg tablet treats 20 L of clear water or 10 L of turbid water, according to Nutriset; the working group’s chart lists 67 mg for 10 L at the “emergency” dose and 20 to 25 L at the “household” dose.
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before drinking (MSF). Use a non-metal container, keep tablets dry, and never mix chlorine with acids or detergents, which can release toxic gas.
  • Mixing tablet sizes causes dosing mistakes (the guidance describes this in Haiti), and chlorine taste put off users in nearly half of the evaluations in a review it cites. Check the strength printed on the pack.
  • Nutriset says Aquatabs are meant for a healthy population over 2 years old. Ask a pharmacist or doctor about younger children.

Water treatment tablet listings we would be careful with

ProductWhat we foundOur check
Aquatabs 49 mg strips (Nikkielon Store ₱343 to ₱1,380; arenade3 ₱1,299 to ₱2,599)US-market tablets. The registry has no 49 mg Aquatabs (its strengths are 33, 67 and 167 mg, 1.67 g, 8.68 g and 15 g). Nikkielon’s text says 49 mg is for 1 litre and also “1 tablet for every 0.75 litres” and “EPA approved”; arenade3 describes it only as helping “clarity” and is rated 3.0.Not scored: no matching Philippine registration found
Aquatabs 8.5 mg from pharmacies (hingpharmacyrm.ph ₱219 to ₱721; joycarepharmacy4f.ph ₱379 to ₱692)Pharmacy shops since 2022 that name Medentech and give a dosage chart (8.5 mg is the 1-litre emergency tablet). No registration number is shown, and no 8.5 mg tablet appeared in the registry results we saw. The portal returns only the first matches. Not scored: ask the shop for the DRHR number
Aquatabs “10 pieces” at ₱140 (Angel’s Health Essentials, hotlistings_ph)Strength not stated; Angel’s text mentions 67 mg and 49 mg without saying which it sells. hotlistings_ph has 183,258 items, 0% response and many near-identical listings. Not scored: strength not stated

FDA statusExact match: Aquatabs, Medentech Limited, 67 mg Effervescent Water Purification Tablet, DRHR-735, valid to 16 December 2030. The registry lists this strength under “Prescription Drug (Rx)”; we did not interpret what that means for retail sale. No advisory found for Aquatabs or for water purification tablets. The listing cites DRHR-735.
Specifications statedAquatabs 67 mg effervescent tablet; origin Ireland; expiry 10-2030 (attribute 10/31/2030); “5 years shelf life”; sold per tablet; 1 tablet per 20 L of clear water, 2 tablets if sediment remains after filtering; wait 30 minutes; cautions: keep out of reach of children, keep dry, avoid eyes, do not swallow
Claims“Kill microorganisms, such as giardia cysts … to prevent diarrhoeal diseases like cholera, typhoid, dysentery”; “all products are authentic”
InconsistenciesWeight is listed as 0.67 g, but the maker’s distributor gives 170 mg total weight for a 67 mg tablet. “5 years shelf life” against an October 2030 expiry. Single tablets mean you do not see the strip label.
SellerVanBushcraft Online Shop (on Shopee since April 2017, 26.2K followers, 4.89 shop rating, 90% response). Listing 4.85; search shows about 300K sold.
Price₱13 per tablet on 22 October 2026, about ₱0.65 per litre at 1 tablet per 20 L

This listing gives the most complete picture: the registration number, the expiry month, the country of origin, the dose for clear and dirty water, the 30-minute wait and the label cautions. The shop is an outdoors seller on Shopee since 2017 that answers nine in ten chats.

It sells single tablets, so you do not see the strip label with the lot number and directions; keep the tablets in a dry, closed container and note the expiry. The weight attribute is wrong, which is a reminder that the listing was typed by the seller, not copied from the pack.

Why it scored well

  • Registration number and expiry stated
  • Dose for clear and dirty water
  • Shop since 2017, 4.89 rating

Watch-outs

  • Loose tablets: no strip label

Its expiry is January 2030, nine months earlier than VanBushcraft’s, and the shop is smaller (7.9K followers). It also sells loose tablets without the strip label.

Why it scored well

  • Registration number cited
  • Expiry consistent in title, text and attribute

The shop answers only about one chat in ten and has six items, so you cannot count on getting the expiry date before you pay. If you buy, ask for the expiry and lot in writing.

Claims“All items are guaranteed authentic”
InconsistenciesThe attributes say “Consumables Form: Capsules” and “Shelf Life: 24 months” for a tablet with an October 2030 expiry. No directions, origin or registration number appear in the text.
SellerAngel’s Health Essentials (on Shopee since September 2019, 86.6K followers, 4.87 shop rating, 99% response). Listing 5.00; search shows about 47 sold (the listing is two weeks old).
Price₱1,350 per 100 tablets on 22 October 2026, ₱13.50 each

A box of 100 from a shop with 86.6K followers and a 99% response rate, which says it has pharmacists on staff. The title states the strength and the expiry year.

The listing text says nothing about doses, origin or the registration number, and the attributes contradict the title (capsules, 24 months). Ask the shop for the DRHR-735 number and the expiry on the box. Its cheaper “10 pieces” listing does not say which strength it sells, so we did not rank it.

Why it scored well

  • Strength and expiry stated in the title
  • Large shop, 99% response
  • Box of 100

Watch-outs

  • No directions or registration number in the text
  • Attributes say capsules and 24 months
  • Only about 47 sold on this new listing

₱13 per tablet

FDA statusExact match: Aquatabs, Medentech Limited, 67 mg Effervescent Water Purification Tablet, DRHR-735, valid to 16 December 2030. The registry lists this strength under “Prescription Drug (Rx)”; we did not interpret what that means for retail sale. No advisory found for Aquatabs or for water purification tablets. The listing cites DRHR-735.
Specifications statedAquatabs 67 mg; sold per tablet; 1 tablet per 20 L of clear water, 2 tablets if sediment remains; wait 30 minutes; origin Ireland; weight attribute 0.67 g
Claims“Kills 99.99% of bacteria, viruses, and harmful microorganisms”; “trusted & approved – used worldwide for disaster relief and military applications”
InconsistenciesThe expiry is “10-2030” at the top, “January 2030” in the text and 01/31/2030 in the attribute. The weight attribute (0.67 g) does not match the maker’s distributor (170 mg total weight). The 99.99% claim is broader than the label claim.
SellerRadge Tactical (on Shopee since May 2018, 3.8K followers, 4.89 shop rating, 88% response). Listing 4.86; search shows about 100K sold.
Price₱13 per tablet on 22 October 2026, about ₱0.65 per litre at 1 tablet per 20 L

Same tablet and registration number as the others, from a tactical-gear shop with 88% response and about 100,000 tablets sold at 4.86.

It scores lowest for its text, not its tablet: the expiry is given two ways (October 2030 or January 2030), and it claims 99.99% against all “harmful microorganisms”, which is wider than the label’s bacteria, virus and Giardia figures. Ask which expiry you will receive.

Why it scored well

  • Registration number cited
  • About 100K sold at 4.86
  • 88% chat response

Watch-outs

  • Expiry stated two ways
  • Broader germ claim than the label
  • “Approved” unexplained

How to choose and use water purification tablets for El Niño

  • Buy the strength that matches your container: one Aquatabs 67 mg tablet treats 20 L of clear water, so a 20 L container needs 1 tablet (₱13) or 2 if you filtered cloudy water (₱26).
  • Ask for the registration number (DRHR-735 for 67 mg) and the expiry, and check them against the pack when it arrives.
  • Filter or settle muddy water first, then add the tablet, stir, cover and wait 30 minutes.
  • Keep tablets dry, in the original strip if possible, away from acids, detergents and children.
  • Store treated water in a clean, lidded container and date it. General advice, not medical advice.
  • Do not rely on tablets for chemical contamination, and ask a pharmacist or doctor about children under 2.
  • Do not hoard bottled water: the Palace asked people not to, and tablets cost about ₱0.65 per litre in our calculation.

How we researched this guide

We searched the Shopee affiliate offer list and Shopee search for Aquatabs, water purification tablets, chlorine tablets and emergency water tablets on October 22, 2026, and read each finalist listing and shop record in full. We looked every brand up in the FDA Philippines verification portal, one word at a time: Aquatabs returned six registrations (DRHR-735, 2031, 2032, 2129, 2144 and 2145) and a second troclosene sodium product (HRP-483, Amherst Laboratories, expiring 17 November 2026) that we did not find on Shopee. We scored them with our published rubric: provenance and registration (25), disclosure (20), claims (20), consistency (10), seller record (15) and value (10). We did not use or test any product.

Aquatabs are drug-registered, so this guide is general information, not medical advice; read the label and ask a pharmacist or doctor if unsure. We matched brand and strength to the registry but could not verify any seller’s stock, expiry or packaging. The El Niño facts are from the sources linked above and may change. This guide has not yet been reviewed by our health content reviewer, and we have not checked the Shopee affiliate programme’s rules for this category.

Frequently asked questions

What are Aquatabs?

Chlorine-releasing (troclosene sodium, NaDCC) water purification tablets made by Medentech in Ireland. You dissolve a tablet in a set volume of water and wait about 30 minutes.

Are Aquatabs FDA-registered in the Philippines?

Yes. The FDA Philippines portal lists Aquatabs under DRHR-735 (67 mg), DRHR-2144 (8.68 g), DRHR-2145 (1.67 g), DRHR-2031 (167 mg), DRHR-2032 (33 mg) and DRHR-2129 (Flo, 15 g), all Medentech Limited.

How many tablets do I need for a 20 litre container?

One 67 mg tablet for 20 litres of clear water, or two if the water was cloudy and you filtered it first, as the listings and the maker's distributor state.

Can I use them on muddy flood water?

Not directly. The working-group guidance says water should be below 5 NTU to be properly disinfected, suggests a double dose for turbid water in short emergencies and says not to chlorinate above 50 NTU. Filter or settle it first.

How long do I wait before drinking?

At least 30 minutes, according to MSF's catalogue and the listings.

Do tablets remove chemicals, salt or heavy metals?

None of the sources we read says so. Nutriset names bacteria and viruses only.

Is it safe for babies?

Nutriset says Aquatabs are meant for a healthy population over 2 years old. Ask a pharmacist or doctor about younger children.

Why is the 67 mg listed as a prescription drug?

The FDA registry record for DRHR-735 shows "Prescription Drug (Rx)" while the 1.67 g and 8.68 g tablets are listed as household remedies. We did not interpret what that means for retail sale; ask a pharmacist.

Why are tablets sold one at a time for ₱13?

Several shops split strips and sell single tablets. That works for small households, but you do not see the strip label, so ask for the expiry.

Should I stock bottled water for El Niño?

The Palace asked people not to hoard bottled water on 1 October and said no shortage had been reported. Check the latest advice.

Did you test these tablets?

No. We read the listings, checked the shops and the FDA portal, and scored what the sellers put in writing.
