Our verdict

Tanch & Co Massage Rub (82/100, from ₱119) is our top pick for an adult rub, and Kamay ni Nanay Baby Massage Oil (79/100, from ₱329) is the one for babies. Both listings describe a cosmetic massage product and make no treatment claims. The best-selling Creations Spa Essentials rub scores 50/100 because its listing says “FDA approved” and promises to relieve arthritis and gastritis.

This guide covers cosmetic massage oils, balms and rubs only. Medicated rubs and liniments (Katinko oil liniments, Tiger Balm, Tai Chi Ginger Rub and similar) are registered as drugs or household remedies and are outside it. This is general information, not medical advice. Pain that is severe, new or lasting needs a doctor.

We searched the Shopee offer list and Shopee search for massage oils, balms and rubs on October 18, 2026, looked each product up in the FDA cosmetic notification list and advisories, and kept four. Most of the cheap best sellers are medicine-style rubs or unverified products, so the pool is thin.

2 of 4

of the listings we scored describe themselves as cosmetic massage products without promising to treat a condition: Tanch & Co and Kamay ni Nanay. Katinko uses health-style words, and the Creations listing says “FDA approved” and promises relief of arthritis and gastritis. Counted from the four listings we read on October 18, 2026.

Prices and stock checked on October 18, 2026. Each product was looked up in the FDA Philippines verification portal (cosmetic notifications and advisories). Per-unit prices use the pack size on the listing (grams for rubs, millilitres for oils), so compare across types with care. We did not use or test any product.

Cosmetic massage product or medicine? Why the claim matters

In the Philippines a massage rub can be a cosmetic, which is notified to the FDA, or a drug or household remedy, which is registered. The FDA register shows both, and this is what we found in it for this guide:

  • Cosmetic notification. The FDA lists massage oils and rubs under cosmetic notifications (numbers starting NN-). The FDA notifies cosmetics; it does not approve them, so “FDA approved” on a cosmetic listing is wrong.
  • Drug or household remedy registration. Menthol, methyl salicylate and camphor liniments appear as household-remedy registrations (numbers starting DRHR-, for example Katinko Oil DRHR-1519). These are outside this guide.
  • Treatment claims point to the drug side. The FDA has named rubs sold with pain-relief claims in advisories as unregistered drugs, for example “Creations Spa Essentials Pain Relief Rub” (2021-1616), “Tiger Balm Neck & Shoulder Rub Boost” (2021-3065), “Sccorpion Balm Rub Formule Speciale” (2026-0999, spelled that way in the advisory) and “Red Alingatong Herbal Liniment Oil” (2021-1795).
  • Variants matter. Meiyi Herbs Essentials Massage Rub is notified, but specific variants (Azulene, Verdelin, Rozine) were named in cosmetic advisories (2025-0211, 2025-0214, 2025-0215), plus 2025-0513 and 2025-1625. Check the exact variant name.
  • Other massage rubs and oils have been named too, including “Baskog Makabuhay Herbal Massage Rub” (2024-0906), “The Naturally Natu Care Massage Rub” (several 2022 advisories) and “Reforce Massage Oil” (2022-1328).

We do not say that any rub works. A massage rub is a skin product used with massage; it gives a scent and a feeling of cooling or warmth. Ask a doctor about pain that is severe, new after an injury, or does not improve.

What the claims on these listings actually mean

ClaimWhat it coversKey exclusion
“FDA approved”Nothing for a cosmetic. The FDA does not approve cosmetics.Ask for the notification number (NN-…) and look it up at the FDA portal.
“Relieves muscle pain, arthritis, inflammation”A treatment claim for a medical condition.A cosmetic notification does not cover treating a condition; such claims have been named in FDA advisories as unregistered drug products.
“Improving circulation” or “easing discomfort”A softer health-style claim. Not shown on the listing; do not read it as treatment.
“Cooling and warming sensation”The feel on the skin from menthol or massage.A sensation, not a treatment.
“Hypoallergenic”The seller says it is gentle. No standard is stated; patch-test first.
“For cosmetic massage use only”The seller says it is a cosmetic. The claim is honest here; check the registry number matches.
Cosmetic notification (our wording)The product appears in the FDA cosmetic notification list with a number and validity date. Not proof of safety or that a rub helps; the notification does not cover a variant that is not listed.

Massage rub listings we would be careful with

ProductWhat we foundOur check
Meiyi Herbs Essentials Massage Rub (BIG 50 g, ₱154)The base product is notified (NN-1000005943240, valid to 24 April 2028), but the FDA named Meiyi Herbs Essentials Massage Rub variants (Azulene, Verdelin, Rozine) in cosmetic advisories (2025-0211, 0214, 0215), plus 2025-0513 and 2025-1625. We did not match a listing to a notified variant. Not scored
“Spa Essentials Pain Relief Rub 50 g Muscle Joint Relief” and similar listings (₱103 to ₱105, 100,000 sold)The name resembles “Creations Spa Essentials Pain Relief Rub”, which FDA Advisory 2021-1616 named as an unregistered drug. Sold by shops such as J&R Beauty Shop (Shopee-verified, 608,327 followers) and Shopee Choice Local (opened February 2024). We did not read these listings. Not scored
“Massage Oil Spa Aroma | Non-Greasy | FDA Approved” (₱330, 30,000 sold)The title says “FDA Approved”, which is not a status the FDA gives cosmetics, and shows no notification number. Sold by D&R Essences PH (since January 2021, 14,283 followers). Not scored

FDA cosmetic notification

From ₱119

FDA statusCosmetic notification NN-1000016348166, “Tanch & Co Massage Balm”, Tanch & Co Online Shop, valid to 2 July 2027. No advisory found. The listing title is not the exact registry name.
Specifications statedPeppermint, Lavender, Ginger and Eucalyptus in 30 g and 55 g, menthol for a cooling feel, directions, patch-test and external-use warnings.
Claims“Cooling and warming sensation”; “intended for cosmetic massage use only and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease”.
InconsistenciesThe ingredient is given only as “Essential Extract”. The text says 50 g while the variants are 30 g and 55 g, and the attributes say 50 ml and “Oil” for an ointment.
SellerTanch & Co (Shopee-verified), on Shopee since 29 July 2017, 10,337 followers, shop rating 4.88. This listing: 4.9 stars from 10,254 ratings, 50,000 sold.
Price₱119 (30 g, about ₱396.67 per 100 g) or ₱149 (55 g, about ₱270.91 per 100 g), checked October 18, 2026.

It ranks first because the listing says what it is, a cosmetic massage product, and does not promise to treat anything. The shop is the registered holder, the notification runs to July 2027, and the listing has 10,254 ratings.

The ingredient list is vague (“Essential Extract”) and the listing title is not the exact registry name. The 55 g size is about 32 percent cheaper per 100 g than the 30 g. Keep menthol rubs away from broken skin and eyes, and ask a doctor before using one on a young child.

Why it scored well

  • States it is for cosmetic massage and not for treating disease
  • Shop name matches the registry holder
  • Patch-test and external-use warnings

Watch-outs

  • Ingredients not listed beyond “Essential Extract”
  • Title differs from the registry name
  • Size and formulation inconsistencies in the attributes

From ₱329

FDA statusCosmetic notification NN-1000014087339, “Kamay ni Nanay Baby Calming Massage Oil”, RZ Ecommerce Corporation, valid to 9 September 2027. No advisory found.
Specifications statedMineral oil with lavender and chamomile essential oils, 50 ml or 100 ml, recommended age 2 weeks and above, directions and an external-use warning.
Claims“Gentle topical cosmetic oil”; “helps moisturize and soften the skin”; “hypoallergenic” (attribute).
InconsistenciesThe ingredient list in the attributes reads “Paraffinum, Liquidum”. The shop also sells mentholated balms for which we found no cosmetic notification.
SellerKamay ni Nanay (official store), on Shopee since 24 December 2022, 279,462 followers, shop rating 4.88. This listing: 4.9 stars from 3,760 ratings, 10,000 sold.
Price₱329 (50 ml, ₱658 per 100 ml) or ₱439 (100 ml, ₱439 per 100 ml), checked October 18, 2026.

The registry name matches the product, the store is the brand’s own, and the listing describes a cosmetic skin-care oil without health promises. It is the only one of the four with a stated minimum age.

It is for babies, not an adult muscle rub, and it is dear per ml, especially the 50 ml size. “Hypoallergenic” is the seller’s word; patch-test it, and ask your baby’s doctor if the skin is sensitive.

Why it scored well

  • Exact registry name, valid to 2027
  • Official store, minimum age and directions stated
  • Cosmetic wording with no treatment claims

Watch-outs

  • For babies only
  • The 50 ml size costs 50 percent more per ml than 100 ml
  • “Hypoallergenic” is not defined on the listing

About ₱474

FDA statusGreenstone Pharmaceutical has cosmetic notifications “Katinko Massage Oil” (NN-1000009398738, valid to 17 June 2029), “Katinko Ginger Body Oil” (NN-1000015379389, valid to 12 February 2027) and “Katinko Peppermint Body Oil” (NN-1000015379725, valid to 27 October 2026). We found no Lavender body oil entry. The brand also holds drug (household remedy) registrations for its oil liniments, which this guide does not cover.
Specifications statedThree 100 ml scents (Ginger, Lavender, Peppermint); for massage, as a bath additive or on the skin.
Claims“Soothing muscles, improving circulation, and easing discomfort”; “relieving tension”.
InconsistenciesNo ingredient list. The Peppermint notification ends nine days after our check, the Lavender entry was not found, and the bundle title does not match the registry names.
SellerKatinko Store Official, on Shopee since 8 January 2020, 145,167 followers, shop rating 4.92. This listing: 4.9 stars from 407 ratings, 1,000 sold.
Price₱474 for 3 x 100 ml, about ₱158 per 100 ml, checked October 18, 2026.

It is the cheapest per 100 ml of the four and is sold by the brand’s official store. The brand has current cosmetic notifications for the Ginger oil and a general “Massage Oil”.

It ranks lower because the listing has no ingredient list, uses health-style words (“improving circulation”), and we could confirm only some of the three scents in the registry. Make sure the box says massage and body oil, not the oil liniment, which is a drug-registered product.

Why it scored well

  • Official brand store
  • Cheapest per 100 ml of the four
  • Cosmetic body oils with notifications into 2027 to 2029

Watch-outs

  • No ingredient list on the listing
  • “Improving circulation” is a health-style claim
  • Peppermint notification ends in days; Lavender not found

Says “FDA approved”

About ₱138

FDA statusCosmetic notification NN-1000005488619, “Creations Spa Essentials Massage Rub”, Shanyong Cosmetic Concept Corp, valid to 24 April 2028. FDA Advisory 2021-1616 named a “Creations Spa Essentials Pain Relief Rub” as an unregistered drug product.
Specifications statedIngredients VCO, ginger oil, chili oil and beeswax; 50 g; four scents; directions and warnings.
Claims“FDA approved”; “for headache, muscle pain, dizziness”; “relieve muscle pain, arthritis, inflammation and stiffness”; “reduce gastritis”; “relieve insect bites”.
InconsistenciesThe FDA does not approve cosmetics, and a cosmetic notification does not cover treating arthritis or gastritis. Hashtags include #CreationsPainReliefRubs. The attributes show “Custom Product: Yes” and an expiry date of 03/01/2027.
SellerCreations Spa Essentials -Main (Shopee-verified), on Shopee since 17 July 2017, 237,738 followers, shop rating 4.90. This listing: 4.9 stars from 196,696 ratings, 2,000,000 sold.
Price₱138 for 50 g, about ₱276 per 100 g, checked October 18, 2026.

It is by far the best-selling massage rub on Shopee (2,000,000 sold), the brand store is long-established, and the product has a cosmetic notification valid to 2028.

We score it low because the listing says “FDA approved” and promises to relieve arthritis, gastritis, dizziness and insect bites. None of that is covered by a cosmetic notification, and a related “Pain Relief Rub” of the same brand was named in an FDA advisory as an unregistered drug. Treat it as a scented massage balm and nothing more.

Why it scored well

  • Cosmetic notification valid to 2028
  • Ingredients, directions and warnings stated
  • Brand store since 2017 with 196,696 ratings

Watch-outs

  • “FDA approved” is not true of a cosmetic
  • Treatment claims the registration does not support
  • A sibling “Pain Relief Rub” was named in an FDA drug advisory

How to choose and use a massage rub

  • Look for the notification number (NN-) and search the exact product and variant name at the FDA portal.
  • Be wary of “FDA approved” on any cosmetic, and of listings that promise to treat arthritis, gastritis, dizziness or a cold. That is medicine language.
  • Prefer a listing that shows the ingredients. Menthol, camphor, chili and essential oils can irritate skin or eyes.
  • Patch-test first, as the listings say: apply a small amount, wait, and stop if the skin reddens or stings. Keep it off eyes, broken skin and sensitive areas. This is general advice.
  • For babies, use only a product made for them, from 2 weeks as the Kamay ni Nanay listing states, and ask the baby’s doctor if the skin is sensitive. Ask a doctor before using any menthol product on a baby.
  • Compare price per 100 g or ml. The big pack of the same product is often much cheaper per 100 g.

How we researched this guide

We searched the Shopee affiliate offer list and Shopee search for massage oil, massage balm, massage cream and muscle rub on October 18, 2026, widened the search by brand name (Katinko, Creations Spa Essentials, Tanch & Co, Kamay ni Nanay, Aromafresh and others), identified each shop and read the listing text of each finalist. We looked each product up in the FDA Philippines verification portal (cosmetic notifications, drug and household-remedy registrations, and advisories) and recorded the number and validity. We scored them with our published rubric: provenance and registration (25), disclosure (20), claims (20), consistency (10), seller record (15) and value (10). We did not use or test any product.

The portal lookup returns only the first matches for a word, so “not found” means we did not see it. This guide is limited to cosmetic products and leaves out anything registered as a drug or household remedy. It has not yet been reviewed by our health content reviewer, and we have not checked the Shopee affiliate programme’s rules for this category.

Frequently asked questions

Is a massage rub the same as a pain relief balm?

Not in the registry. A cosmetic massage rub is notified to the FDA; a rub that contains menthol, methyl salicylate or camphor and is sold to relieve pain is usually registered as a drug or household remedy. This guide covers only the cosmetic kind.

Are these rubs FDA approved?

No cosmetic is FDA approved. We checked that each has a cosmetic notification with a validity date. A listing that says "FDA approved" is using the wrong word.

Does a massage rub relieve muscle pain?

We cannot say that any rub works. Massage and warmth may feel good, but this guide does not claim a treatment effect. Severe or lasting pain needs a doctor.

Why is the best-seller ranked so low?

The Creations Spa Essentials listing says "FDA approved" and promises relief of arthritis, gastritis and dizziness. A cosmetic notification does not cover those claims, and a related pain relief rub was named in an FDA advisory.

What is the Meiyi advisory about?

The FDA named several Meiyi Herbs Essentials Massage Rub variants (Azulene, Verdelin, Rozine) as unauthorized cosmetics in 2025. The base product is notified, so check the exact variant.

Can I use a menthol rub on my baby?

Ask your baby's doctor before using any menthol product. The Kamay ni Nanay baby oil is made for babies from 2 weeks, per its listing, and is not a menthol rub.

What does the validity date mean?

It is the date the cosmetic notification ends. The Katinko peppermint body oil entry ends 27 October 2026, so look for a renewal.

Why are Katinko oil liniments not included?

They are registered as drugs (household remedies), and this guide is limited to cosmetic products.

What is the cheapest option?

Per 100 ml, the Katinko bundle at about ₱158. Per 100 g, the Tanch & Co 55 g at about ₱271. They are different products, so the unit prices are not strictly comparable.

How do I patch-test a rub?

Apply a small amount to a small area of skin, wait, and stop if there is redness, stinging or itching. The Tanch & Co and Katinko listings give similar warnings. This is general advice.

Why are Martina's and Ginhawang not scored?

We did not find a cosmetic notification under those names in our lookups. That is not proof they are unregistered.

Can I use a massage oil as a bath oil?

The Katinko listing says its oils can be used as a bath additive. We did not test this; follow the product label.
