Our verdict

For daily use, Dear, Klairs All-day Airy Sunscreen (75/100) has the most honest listing: full ingredients and three published SPF test results. For long hours outdoors, Sunplay Ultra Shield (73/100) is water resistant and made for face and body.

On a budget, Camou (58/100) is the cheapest notified sunscreen per millilitre we found.

No sunscreen scored above 75. Every one we checked is properly notified with the FDA, but not one seller printed its FDA notification number, and most made claims they could not back up.

The Philippines is heading into a hot, dry season. PAGASA says a strong to very strong El Niño is under way, may peak before the end of 2026 and should last into the first half of 2027, with warmer-than-usual temperatures and below-normal rainfall into early 2027. That means more days in the sun, more sweat and, on dry clear days, fewer clouds between you and the UV. A sunscreen that slides off when you sweat, or that you only put on once in the morning, will not keep up.

So we went through Shopee’s best-selling sunscreens the way we review everything: checking each one against the FDA Philippines record, then reading the listing for what it actually discloses and what it claims.

What El Niño means for your sunscreen

El Niño does not change the sun, but it changes how much of it you get and how your sunscreen holds up.

  • More heat, more sweat. PAGASA expects slightly warmer to warmer-than-usual temperatures in most of the country. Its heat index scale puts 33 to 41°C at “extreme caution” and 42 to 51°C at “danger”. Sweat and wiping your face remove sunscreen, which is why the American Academy of Dermatology says to reapply after sweating.
  • Fewer cloudy, rainy days. Below-normal rainfall is forecast into early 2027. Clouds cut some UV; dry, clear days give you the full dose.
  • The UV is already extreme. On the World Health Organization scale, a UV index of 11 or more is “extreme”. PhilRice researchers have recorded readings above 12 in the Philippines, with the peak around noon to 3 pm.

The practical answer is not a higher SPF. It is enough sunscreen, reapplied every two hours and after sweating, plus shade, a hat and avoiding the midday sun when you can. If you work outdoors, choose a water-resistant formula and keep it with you.

SPF 90, SPF 130, SPF 150: do higher numbers help?

Shopee is full of sunscreens advertising SPF 90, 100 and even 150. Some are notified with the FDA at those numbers. But the protection does not scale the way the number suggests.

LabelUVB let through (at test amount)UVB blocked
SPF 15About 7%About 93%
SPF 30About 3%About 97%
SPF 50About 2%About 98%
SPF 130About 0.8%About 99%
Calculated as 1 ÷ SPF. Real-world protection is lower, because most people apply far less than the 2 mg per square centimetre used in testing.

That is why Japan’s industry labelling standard stops at “SPF 50+”, and why the US FDA has proposed the same cap. A sky-high SPF is not harmful in itself, but it encourages people to apply less and reapply less, which wipes out the difference. An SPF 50 applied generously and reapplied beats an SPF 130 applied once.

“Waterproof” and “sweatproof”: what water resistance really means

No sunscreen is waterproof. In the United States, the FDA banned the words “waterproof”, “sweatproof” and “sunblock” on sunscreen labels in 2012. A water-resistance claim there must say how long it lasted in a standard test: “Water Resistant (40 minutes)” or “(80 minutes)”. That test measures the SPF after time spent in water. It is not a sweat test, and it is not permission to skip reapplying.

None of the water or sweat claims we read on Shopee gave minutes or named a test. One best-seller’s title promises “Waterproof Sweatproof”. Treat any such claim as “may last a little longer when you sweat”, and reapply anyway.

Sunscreen listings we would not buy from

These were for sale on Shopee when we checked. None could be a pick.

ProductWhat we foundOur check
SADOER Sunscreen SPF 90+ “Waterproof Sweatproof” creamWe found a notification for a SADOER sunscreen lotion, not this cream. The FDA has issued advisories against three other SADOER products, most recently No. 2026-1163 (September 2026). The listing says “Fragrance Free” while its ingredient list includes fragrance, and its directions tell you to “leave the mask sheet on your face for 15-20 minutes”. It contains 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, a UV filter the EU has banned from cosmetics.Fails our advisory check
La Roche-Posay Anthelios from unofficial sellersThe real product is notified through authorised distributors. On Shopee we found it from ₱202 (90% off) to ₱2,134, from resellers, and no official La Roche-Posay store.Counterfeit risk
Beauty Vault Premium Hydrating SunscreenNotified (SPF 50 PA+++), but the listing gives no ingredients or PA rating, and the brand has an unlifted 2021 FDA advisory on one of its kojic soaps.Fails our advisory check

SellerDear, Klairs official store (Shopee Mall, fulfilled by Shopee)
Price₱475 for 50 g

The best-documented sunscreen listing we read. Besides the full ingredient list, Klairs publishes the results of three separate SPF tests, naming each laboratory and the ISO 24444:2019 test method: 51, 54.8 and 69. Showing three different numbers, instead of one flattering one, is exactly the kind of honesty we look for. SPF results genuinely vary between labs, and the listing lets you see it.

For an El Niño summer, know its limits. It makes no water-resistance claim, so it is a daily, mostly-indoors and commute sunscreen, not one for a beach day or outdoor work. One reviewer also found its dewy finish heavy in Philippine heat; oily skin may prefer a matte formula.

Why it scored well

  • Full ingredient list with UV filters
  • Three SPF test results, labs and method named
  • Official store with Mall guarantees

Watch-outs

  • No water resistance: reapply after sweating
  • Dewy finish may feel heavy on oily skin in the heat
  • “EWG 1-2 approved”: EWG rates ingredients, it does not approve products

Best for outdoor days

2. Sunplay Ultra Shield Lotion SPF 130 PA++++ (35 g)

Water resistant?Yes, on the pack, but no minutes stated
SellerWatsons official store (Shopee Mall)
Price₱425 for 35 g

The pick for long hours outside: commuting on foot, outdoor work, a weekend at the beach. It is a long-standing drugstore brand, sold here by Watsons’ official store, with a full ingredient list that mixes mineral (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) and chemical filters. The pack says water resistant and is made for face and body. The listing also says plainly, “Do not stay too long under the sun even while using a sunscreen product.”

Do not buy it for the number. SPF 130 does not mean more than twice the protection of SPF 50: at the amount used in testing, SPF 50 lets through about 2% of UVB and SPF 130 about 0.8%. Japan’s labelling standard stops at “SPF 50+” for this reason. The pack also does not say how many minutes its water resistance lasts, and the directions say only “reapply as desired”. Reapply every two hours anyway.

Why it scored well

  • Water resistant, face and body
  • Full ingredient list, mineral and chemical filters
  • Sold by Watsons’ official store

Watch-outs

  • SPF 130 is barely more protective than SPF 50
  • Water resistance minutes not stated
  • Small 35 g bottle for face-and-body use

Lightest texture

3. SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF50+ PA++++ (50 ml)

SPF50+ PA++++

₱10.98 per ml

FDA statusNotified cosmetic, e.g. NN-1000014767110 (valid to June 2027), under three importers
FDA number in listing? No. The title says “[FDA Approved]”
ProtectionSPF50+ PA++++; chemical (organic) UV filters named
Water resistant?Not claimed
SellerSKIN1004 official store (Shopee Mall)
Price₱549 for 50 ml (listed as down from ₱1,600)

The viral Korean sun serum, and a genuinely notified product with a full ingredient list. Its watery texture is the reason people love it in humid weather, and the official store is the place to buy it: the FDA record also contains a look-alike, “Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum” from a different brand, so check the brand name on what you buy.

It lost points on claims. The title calls it “[FDA Approved]”, but cosmetics in the Philippines are notified, not approved. The specification panel calls it “Non-Chemical”, while every UV filter in it is a chemical filter. “Reef Safe” has no definition or certifier behind it. And like Klairs, it makes no water-resistance claim.

Why it scored well

  • Full ingredient list with UV filters
  • Light, serum texture for humid days
  • Official store with Mall guarantees

Watch-outs

  • “FDA Approved” in the title: cosmetics are notified, not approved
  • Spec panel says “Non-Chemical”; its filters are chemical
  • No water resistance; “Reef Safe” uncertified

Water resistant?“Sweat resistant”, no minutes stated
SellerCamou for Men store (Shopee Mall)
Price₱265 for 40 ml

The cheapest notified sunscreen per millilitre among our finalists, from a local brand with a large following. It is the only listing in this guide that gives the right reapplication advice in plain words: “Reapply every 2 hours for continuous UV protection.” For a daily sunscreen you will actually use generously, price per millilitre matters.

The disclosure is thin. There is no full ingredient list, so you cannot see which UV filters protect you beyond titanium dioxide. The title says PA++ while the description says PA++++ (the FDA record says PA++++). “Sweat resistant” comes with no test or time, and “FDA Approved” is the wrong term for a cosmetic.

Why it scored well

  • Lowest price per ml among our picks
  • Clear “reapply every 2 hours” direction
  • Notified, sold by the brand’s Mall store

Watch-outs

  • No full ingredient list
  • PA++ in the title, PA++++ in the description
  • “Sweat resistant” and “anti blue light” with no test named

Also considered

Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence, 15 g (58/100). Likely a very good sunscreen, and fully notified, with one of the most complete listings we read: full ingredients, named filters and a real expiry date. It lost points for unsupported claims (“World’s First Micro Defense”, “#1 sunscreen brand in Japan”, “water & sweat resistant” without minutes), customer quotes used as proof, and a specification panel that lists a 50 g pack on a 15 g product. The score reflects this listing; the 15 g travel size is also the most expensive per gram.

Y.O.U Sunbrella 2% Niacinamide, 30 ml (49/100). Notified and popular, but the listing gives no ingredient list or UV filters, says PA+++ in the title and PA++++ in the description, and promises “24H Longwearing” for a product that, like all sunscreens, needs reapplying.

How to choose

  • SPF 30 to 50, PA+++ or PA++++: PA measures UVA protection, the rays behind tanning, dark spots and skin ageing. See sunscreen labels decoded.
  • Look for a full ingredient list that names the UV filters. If a listing will not tell you what protects you, assume it is hiding something.
  • Outdoor work, sport or the beach: choose a water-resistant formula, and still reapply every two hours.
  • Check the notification on the FDA portal. Sunscreens are cosmetics, so look for an NN- number, not “FDA approved”.
  • Buy branded sunscreens from the official store. A famous sunscreen at 90% off is a warning sign.
  • Babies under six months: keep them out of direct sun and ask your paediatrician before using any sunscreen.

How to use sunscreen in the heat

  • Use enough. The SPF on the label is measured with a thick layer; most people use far less. For face and neck, apply generously and do not thin it out to stretch the bottle.
  • Apply at least 15 minutes before going out, as the labels in this guide that give a time direct.
  • Reapply every two hours, and straight after swimming, heavy sweating or towelling off.
  • Do not forget ears, neck and the backs of hands, especially for commuters and riders.
  • Sunscreen is one layer. Shade, a hat, long sleeves and avoiding the noon-to-3 pm peak matter as much.
  • Store it out of a hot car or direct sun, and replace it after the expiry date.

Watch for heat illness too. Dizziness, headache, nausea, heavy sweating or hot, dry skin in the heat need shade, water and rest; confusion or fainting needs emergency care.

How we researched this guide

We searched Shopee for sunscreen on October 11, 2026, checked more than a dozen brands against the FDA Philippines verification portal and its advisories, and read eight listings in full, including label photos for our top three. Each was scored with our published rubric. For sunscreen, the key disclosure is the SPF, the PA rating and the named UV filters. Price per gram or millilitre uses each listing’s stated size.

Climate information comes from PAGASA’s El Niño monitoring and seasonal outlooks (as reported by GMA News, the Manila Bulletin and the Inquirer) and the US NOAA Climate Prediction Center’s October 2026 ENSO update. Sunscreen guidance draws on the American Academy of Dermatology, the US FDA sunscreen monograph and the Japan Cosmetic Industry Association’s SPF and PA labelling standard.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sunscreen in the Philippines?

In our review, Dear, Klairs All-day Airy Sunscreen scored highest (75/100) for its complete, honest listing. For long hours outdoors, Sunplay Ultra Shield (73/100) is water resistant and made for face and body.

Is SPF 130 better than SPF 50?

Barely. At the test amount, SPF 50 lets through about 2% of UVB and SPF 130 about 0.8%. Applying enough and reapplying matters far more than the number.

How often should I reapply sunscreen?

Every two hours, and right after swimming, heavy sweating or towelling off, even with a water-resistant sunscreen.

Is there a waterproof sunscreen?

No. Water-resistant sunscreens keep their SPF for a tested time in water, usually 40 or 80 minutes. "Waterproof" and "sweatproof" are not allowed on US sunscreen labels.

Does El Niño make the sun stronger?

Not the sun itself. PAGASA forecasts warmer, drier weather into 2027, which means fewer clouds, more time outdoors and more sweat, all of which make sun protection harder.

What does PA++++ mean?

PA is a Japanese rating for UVA protection, the rays behind tanning, dark spots and skin ageing. PA++++ is the highest grade.

Are sunscreens FDA approved in the Philippines?

Sunscreens are cosmetics, so they are notified with the FDA, not approved. Look for an NN- notification on the FDA verification portal.

How do I check if my sunscreen is FDA notified?

Search the product name on verification.fda.gov.ph and look under cosmetics. Then search the brand for advisories.

Can I use body sunscreen on my face?

Some products, like Sunplay Ultra Shield, are made for both. Face-only formulas are usually lighter. Check the label.

Do I need sunscreen indoors or on cloudy days?

UV passes through clouds and window glass. If you sit by a window or go out at all, a daily sunscreen is worth it.

Can a supplement replace sunscreen?

No. "Oral sunblock" supplements are not a substitute. Keep using sunscreen.

Why is a famous sunscreen so cheap on Shopee?

A big discount from an unofficial seller is a counterfeit warning sign. We found the same La Roche-Posay sunscreen from ₱202 to ₱2,134. Buy from the official store.
